Forbidden Art
Book Review
Miss Naomi is a woman after my own
heart. In addition to her traditional life as a wife, mother, charity
volunteer and political activist (not to mention that I hear she lives
in a nudist colony!), Miss Naomi is an antiques collector. Luck for all
of us, she has chosen to collect erotic artwork. She presents her
impressive collection to us in this gorgeous coffee table book, with
500 color photographs of her prize pieces. Spanning many countries,
cultures, artists and mediums, Miss Naomi's collection is extensive,
and includes sculpture, illustration, even ceramic dishes. From the
first century A.D. Pompeiian bronze statue of Pan coupling with a goat,
to a Mapplethorpe poster of a penis, from elegant pocketwatches painted
with sex scenes to an apple sculpture with female genitalia as the core
as a metaphor for Eve, by my friend Rene "I Am The Best Artist"
Moncado, Miss Naomi finds naughtiness in even the most prosaic objects.
And she also shows us that no matter how often sexuality is squashed,
quashed and repressed, it is always there, titillating and tantalizing
us. In fact, in the instances where these naughty tidbits are most
surprising--i.e., the carved monk tobacco box with a compartment that
opens to reveal an erect phallus--they are also the most stimulating.
Somehow, the more sexuality is swept under the rug, the dirtier it
gets! If you want to impress your friends with more than just the
latest copy of Hustler, you can boost your high brow quotient
considerably by leaving a copy of this lovely tome lying around your
apartment.
