Jim MalibuMan Behind the CameraJim Malibu has been in the adult entertainment industry for almost three decades and he’s “filled” just about every job, from running porn theaters to production assistant, art director to producer, talent to director. I was fortunate to spend five action-packed and oft hilarious days with him on an LA porn set and I can say that not only does the man know what he’s doing, he makes doing it a pleasure for everyone involved! He spent a few moments between whipping up smut for himself and all the big name companies to chat with ErosZine about beautiful women, the most fun shoots and why you won’t ever see a picture of him anywhere.ErosZine: You've had a long and varied history in the adult entertainment industry. How did you find yourself in porn? Jim Malibu: After art school I went to San Francisco and immersed myself in the art scene out there. I was doing all kinds of art and eventually as an artist I found an in with the adult industry. The 70's were full of free love so it wasn't difficult to accept the sex industry. And the rest is history. ErosZine: You've acted in a few features. What was that like? Jim Malibu: I started in adult behind the camera, because that's really what I enjoy the most, but once you become involved in the adult industry you get curious and that's what led me to a few stints in front of the camera. It was an adventure, and when I did it I had fun. But it was only a few times. ErosZine: Who was most fun to, um, "act" with? Jim Malibu: I don't want to name names as a performer, but as a director I loved to work with Veronica Hart, Sharon Mitchell, Jeannie Pepper and Sharon Kane, just to name a few. ErosZine: So in addition to acting, you've art directed, produced and served as "miscellaneous crew" on numerous films. You must have some hilarious stories. Jim Malibu: Yeah, the one we’re doing right now is funny! But there are so many of them, how do you filter them out? Once there was a girl who was late to a shoot and she called to say she was locked in her garage. We asked where she was calling from – so we could go help her, ya know -- and she said from a phone booth. Oh, so you‘ve got a phone both in your garage [laughs]. But there are so many quirky stories like that from over the years. When AVN wanted to give me their Hall of Fame award they told me they didn’t have any pictures of me in their archives. And I said, that’s right! There’s a reason you have no pictures of me! I’ve always been in the background and I remain in the background. I just make the movies and have fun doin’ it, basically! ErosZine: For the past 17 years you've been directing. Tell us about a few of your favorite shoots. Jim Malibu: Sex Whores was one of my favorite movies. It was a take-off of Star Wars. We had special effects, spaceships landing, crazy costumes. We got a bunch of people from San Francisco, where we were filming, to appear in our version of the space bar. John Stagliano’s Fashionistas was incredible. I was the line producer and art director on that one. I had a lot of fun doing the art part of it. We were nominated for a lot of awards and we won a lot, but we didn’t win the one for art direction! And we should have! Those two both had fun art direction. Unfortunately, most videos today can’t afford to pay for good art direction. I enjoyed the Ozporns, too, from VCA. It was, of course, a take off on the rock stuff. Café Flesh 2 was pretty outrageous and fun; New Wave Hookers 6 and 7 were great. I love to be able to get really creative with the art direction. ErosZine: What's the toughest sort of scene to direct? Jim Malibu: Oh, god, when the male talent comes with an attitude and can’t keep his dick up. We’ll keep him nameless cause there’s more than one! ErosZine: Your career has spanned a time period that has seen porn go from a largely taboo subject to being almost totally mainstream. Why do you think things have changed so much? Or have they? Jim Malibu: I've been in the adult industry for 29 years. I started out running theaters that showed porn flicks and then I began making movies in 1978. I love doing creative things; I'm an artist and since the production side is where you make the art, it's always been the place I'm naturally attracted to. I've seen a lot of changes over the years but at the same time it hasn't really changed at all. At least in terms of how I make my movies. Even though we now say that the adult industry has gone mainstream, I still believe it's far from mainstream. ErosZine: Your series, Pure Pussy, is what I refer to as penisless porn. I've always wondered about the motivation behind this genre. Is it because there are some men who'd rather not see cocks in their porn? Jim Malibu: Pure Pussy is just fun to do. I get to shoot women getting naked and having a great time with each other. The series always changes and each volume has a different theme. What guy doesn’t want to watch beautiful women getting it on with each other? ErosZine: I love how you've done all those "themes": Latinas, Blondes and my favorite, Goes Goth. Jim Malibu: Thank you. I love watching beautiful women. Who doesn't? ErosZine: What do you think of "alt-porn"? Is it the future of porn? Jim Malibu: The adult industry has always been alt., so I don't consider it the future of porn. ErosZine: And what's in the future for Jim Malibu? Jim Malibu: In the future I plan to continue filming beautiful women. You can always check up with me on my site www.jimmalibu.com. ErosZine: Thanks, Jim! [Written May 2007] |
